Pua Pohinahina earrings – the tiny flowers of our native pohinahina plant make every day earrings a breeze. These adorable little earrings are super light and easy to wear. Pohinahina is a survivor through drought, sun, rain, salt, wind and more. Part of our Kahakai Lei Collection, we often use pohinahina leaves and flowers in lei.
Pohinahina
Pohinahina (Vitex rotundifolia) as a low shrub along the coastlines. In old Hawaii, people would layer the fragrant leaves with kapa to keep bugs away. This native plant has a number of Hawaiian names depending on which island you’re on, including Hinahina kolo, Kolokolo kahakai, Manawanawa and Polinalina. The flowers and leaves are used in lei, and the edible leaves were used medicinally by the Hawaiians to treat stomach problems, and in more modern times to treat back pain.
This plant is a survivor, withstanding sun, salt, wind and rain. It’s hardy and can thrive both on the coast and inland – its often used as ground cover and is useful to combat erosion.
