Box Jelly
There three kinds of Box jellies found in Hawaii. These predators are sometimes referred to as a sea wasp, and like many other jellies, have stinging cells for feeding and protection. They inhabit the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. Nearly transparent, these beauties are extremely difficult to spot before they deliver their sting. In Hawaii we know them well – a few days each month most of us steer clear of the water to avoid an encounter. But there is much to respect about them! With 20 simple eyes and 4 fully functioning eyes (with retinas), and a rare ability to swim directionally, they are unusual amongst jellies in that they actively HUNT their prey. The neurotoxin they employ is not as painful nor as deadly as Australia’s infamous Irukandji, but it can still do quite a bit of damage, even to an adult. Read more about them in our Box Jelly blog.
