Great Hammerhead Sharks
The great hammerhead is the largest of the 9 species of hammerhead shark. They average around 4.6m but can get up to 6.1m (20ft) long. These big beauties are found in tropical and warm temperate waters worldwide, including Hawaii, and inhabit coastal and continental shelf areas. Great Hammerheads reach maturity between 5 and 9 years of age, quicker than other hammerheads, and can live up to 44 years, possibly longer.
All hammerhead eyes and nostrils are found at either end of their uniquely-shaped head, and enables them to see 360 degrees. Unlike scalloped hammerheads, great hammerheads are solitary creatures known to migrate long distances alone (1200 km). They use their unique heads to sense prey, and primarily feed on ocean floor creatures such as cephalopods (like octopus), stingrays, crustaceans, and other sharks.
Unfortunately, they are targeted by the shark fin trade because of their distinctive large fins, and are very vulnerable to overfishing. More than 90% of them will die once captured, however incidental the capture. IUCN lists the great hammerhead as endangered.
